Last November was a miserable month for me. After ‘break’ for about 10 days (started from 20th-30th Nov), and yet, I feel blur today..I keep looking (15 min) at a blank paper on my table without thinking ‘nothing’ in my mind. What is wrong with me?? In fact, I have a presentation by end of this month: my 6 months progress..but then, still ‘nothing’ much in my mind..and yet, have 2 deadlines to catch up on 14th Dec (journal – pending for about a year & NLP SIG website)..ya ampun!!! and also, the preparation for the presentation at MMU..
Forget about those deadlines for the moment..haha..
Indeed, I’ve found this comics and it is good for describing myself – sometimes happened to me :p

For the last two weeks i did nothing on my PhD work..i felt very demotivated though.
What did i do for the last two weeks?
a. busy with the establishment of the new project (killing two birds in one stone: a. contribution to my organisation, and b. a field work for my data collection)
b. busy with silly thingy (jailbreak my iTouch)- due to demotivated feeling 😦
Thus, i came across this morning to read some articles to boost up my motivation. Actually, am still blur with the expectation of my supervisor after 5 months starting..With that, below are some points that quite crucial for my case:
Formal steps in the supervision
3-6 months after starting
The education and supervision plan is discussed at this first meeting between PhD student, supervisor, tutor and mentor. In order to prepare for this meeting, the mentor receives a copy of the education and supervision plan with the PhD research proposal a week in advance. At the meeting, the topic of discussion is whether the experiences during the first period have met mutual expectations or if there are reasons to consider prematurely ending the employment.
9 months after starting
Mentor meeting with PhD student, supervisor, tutor and mentor where the progress of the research and education are evaluated and any bottlenecks and the more detailed work plan are discussed. The continuation of the employment is discussed at this meeting. Before this evaluation, the PhD student must make a literature review (± 5 pages) and draw up a time plan for the second year together with the tutor and the supervisor.
12 months after starting
At the end of the first year, the go/no go decision is made. A committee assesses a PhD student 1 year after his appointment on the basis of a lecture and a written report by the PhD student. The tutor and the day-to-day supervisor are also present at this assessment.
21 months after starting
Mentor meeting at which the progress of the research and education are evaluated and any bottlenecks are discussed. In preparation of this meeting, the PhD drafts a short report (1 page) of his work and a modified work plan, if applicable. At this meeting, there should be a detailed plan for the coming 2 years including a description of the structure of the draft thesis and the status of the chapters.
33 months after starting
Mentor meeting where agreements are made regarding completion of the doctoral programme. In preparation of this meeting, the PhD student drafts a short overview of the current status of his doctoral programme.
42 months after starting
Mentor meeting at which the status of the thesis manuscript is discussed as well as any plans for a continued academic career. Possibilities for applying for subsidy request are discussed as well as the role that the faculty could play in this.
and, I found this:
The other side of the coin is that your supervisor has reasonable expectations of you. These would include:
- that you are academically competent, can handle the theories and major concepts in your area, but will acknowledge and work on any weaknesses or acquire any necessary technical or research skills;
- that you are able to express yourself both orally and in writing. Remember, although part of your supervisor’s role is to guide you in the use of appropriate discipline-specific language conventions, writing is still your responsibility.
- that you keep your supervisor informed about the progress of your work and whether you’re facing any problems. Too often supervisors say “If only I’d known that (the experiments failed, you’ve run out of money, broken your leg)”.
- that you can organise yourself, meet deadlines, and in general not need to be told what to do and be ‘supervised’ all the time. But … that you will ask for help if you need it.
In other words, you should be able to expect a professional supervisor, and your supervisor should be able to expect you to be professional also. This relationship is so important that it warrants time, thought and energy to keep it working.

Hope I could improve myself and keep motivated after :p

on:I did not update my blog for ages..virus ‘M’ attacking again..but not for today I guess..I will start to blog as usual 🙂
Three of us (Papa, Buzz and I) went for the baby contests organised by Poppies last month (we managed to participate in the contests started from Sat til Sun – the actual event started from 9-11th Oct). It was fun and very enjoyable. In fact, it was our first experience to join the baby contests. We (actually, Papa and Buzz jak yang main..haha) joined various activities on last 2 days:
Saturday events:
a. Anmum Superdad – Papa had to prepare a milk (using Dr Brown’s sippy cup) for 14 months toddler. The requirement from the judge were : the temperature of the milk must be suitable for the given age, measurement of the milk must be correct and the presentation must be neat. and the result was: Papa won for the 1st place – he got hamper (1 box Anmum formula milk, 1 set Sesame street Art Activity and 1 set Tommee Tippee bottle feeding (will keep this for our future baby ;))
b. Heinz Feeding – This activity was meant for Father and the baby ONLY. Heinz provided a fruity juice and the parents had to fill-in 2 oz of juice into their baby’s bottle. At first, I am quite happy when I saw Buzz was so cool with Papa..But then, when the contest just started, Buzz refused to drink form his bottle (i guess to chosen juice was to sour for him – it was my mistake 😦 ). Since there was a couple who broke the rules whereby the mommy feed the baby instead of daddy (Papa and I was very angry to this couple – they won the contest), I ran to the stage and feed Buzz..At last, we only got consolation gift (1 soft toy and 1 box Rusk Biscuit-Heinz)..never mind, it was a good try for Buzz, indeed.
so fast…

Wow..I cant believe it that I have created my own blog today! haha..It’s funny, actually..Frankly speaking, I am not a type of person that like to do any write-up. In other words, PEMALAS..However, ‘something’ has pushed me up to do a write-up..haha..Thanks to Poja, my dear friend (she is in Belfast right now) for waking me up to start blogging..though I am the one motivated her to do a blog last time..
As for today, the interface of my blog is bored only text. I did nothing with it. Will try to explore more about WordPress soon…Hopefully, I’ll love writing so much..as part of my life starting from TODAY!
In short, I’ll share my experiences as a mom and postgrad student, my dreams as well as my so-called ‘diary’ with you guys..
